All About: St. Patrick’s Day

What a day! With celebrations happening all day, St. Patrick’s Day is so very lively in the Washington, Pennsylvania, and Maryland areas. Many of us find Patty’s Day to be an excuse to hit the town, but do you know exactly where the holiday came from? There are some pretty interesting facts & we would love to share them with you!

St Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland, and as many people know, the holiday is surrounding the culture of the Irish. However, what many do not know is that Patrick was actually born British and taken to Ireland by the rebels when he was 16 years old. He spent time captive, and penned famous writings that showed his devout faith throughout it all. Later on in life, years after his release, he became a priest and went back to Ireland to serve there.

So, why do we celebrate St Patrick’s Day you ask? Good question! The holiday was traditionally started in America until 1762 in NYC, but it was a day during Lent that the prohibitions were lifted for a day, so everyone could feast on meat and indulge in drinking! Not much has changed with the celebration now!

Many people take this day to enjoy some shepherds pie, corned beef and cabbage, and some good old fashioned Irish beer. If you are celebrating, be certain that you are being responsible. With so many festivities and the inclination to jump around town throughout the night, why not set up your own personal chauffeur to assist you and your party?
